Rohit Sharma made his Test debut in 2013 and has since played 67 Test matches, amassing 4301 runs, including 12 hundreds and 18 fifties. India played 24 Test matches under Rohit, winning 12 and losing 9.
Rohit Sharma, the captain of India, has declared his immediate retirement from Test cricket. After Rohit made the announcement on Instagram, the news broke. After India won the Twenty20 World Cup last year, the 38-year-old has already retired from Twenty20 Internationals.
“Hi everyone, I just wanted to let you know that I’m leaving Test cricket. Wearing white to represent my country has been an absolute honor. I appreciate all of your love and support throughout the years. In the ODI format, I will still represent India,” Rohit wrote.
In the fourth match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia in Melbourne in December of last year, Rohit played his final Test match. Due to his poor form, he was dropped from the fifth Test in Sydney.
With 4301 runs from 116 innings, including 12 hundreds and 18 fifties, Rohit concludes his Test career. The Indian Express said earlier in the day that Rohit would be fired as captain of the Indian Test team prior to the England tour.
The poor Test performance of Rohit Sharma
India’s home Test series against Bangladesh and New Zealand, followed by a tour to Australia, was when Rohit’s batting slump began. Despite winning the two Test matches against Bangladesh, Rohit’s team lost six of eight Test matches, including against Australia and New Zealand.
The records of Rohit Sharma as captain of the Indian Test team
After succeeding Virat Kohli as captain in 2022, Rohit captained the national team in 24 Test matches, winning 12 and losing 9. India even advanced to the 2023 World Test Championship final under Rohit Sharma, but they were defeated by Australia in the summit match.
In 2010, Rohit was supposed to play his first Test match in Nagpur against South Africa. His first appearance in the whites at Eden Gardens against the West Indies was postponed for three more years due to a bizarre injury. On his Test debut, he scored a hundred.
Rohit’s performance in red-ball cricket declined sharply until 2019, when he was promoted to open against a visiting South African team, despite his early success in Test cricket. In 2019, he scored 212 runs in Ranchi against South Africa, which was his highest Test score to date.
