In Short

  • Earthquakes of magnitudes 7.7 and 6.4 struck Myanmar
  • High-rise collapses in Bangkok, several workers trapped
  • 3 dead in mosque collapse in Myanmar

After two consecutive 7.7 and 6.4-magnitude earthquakes rocked Myanmar on Friday, Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, felt powerful tremors that flattened a high-rise and forced the government to declare an emergency and halt rail and metro services. Bangladesh, China’s southwest Yunnan province, Meghalaya, and several northeastern states also experienced strong aftershocks.

The earthquake had such an impact that three laborers were killed when a high-rise collapsed in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district, some 900 kilometers away. Many remain trapped. People were forced to flee their homes due to the tremors, and high-rise buildings’ pools began to leak water.

Three people lost their lives when a mosque in Myanmar partially collapsed. The huge earthquake, which had its epicentre close to Sagaing, also caused the famous 90-year-old Ava Bridge in Mandalay, Myanmar, to collapse into the Irrawaddy River.

The streets of Mandalay were littered with debris, religious shrines, and collapsed buildings, according to social media posts. In the capital Naypyidaw, cracks also appeared in a number of roads.

“In front of my eyes, a five-story building collapsed. A witness told Reuters, “Everyone in my town is out on the road, and nobody dares to go back inside buildings.”

HIGH-RISE COLLAPSES IN BANGKOK, METRO HALTED

In Bangkok, several buildings were evacuated and businesses closed for the day. However, there were no immediate reports of casualties in the Thai capital.

The government shut down Bangkok’s subways, airport, and metro services, putting the city under lockdown. Additionally, the Thai Stock Exchange halted all trading.

A resident of Chiang Mai, Thailand, told AFP, “I was sleeping in the house, and then I ran as far as I could in my pyjamas out of the building.”

When the building began to move, a Scottish tourist in one of Bangkok’s malls reported hearing screams and a great deal of panic.

“Suddenly, the entire building started to move. He told AP, “There was a lot of screaming, a lot of panic, people running down the escalators in the wrong direction, and a lot of banging and crashing inside the mall.”

X was inundated with terrifying videos that showed people fleeing into the streets in fear as malls and buildings trembled violently.

A 30-story skyscraper’s edge was splashed with water from an infinity pool in another video. Another depicted a high-rise that was still under construction completely collapsing, leaving behind a huge smoke plume.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his concern about the state of affairs in Thailand and Myanmar and extended an offer of Indian support.

“I’m praying for everyone’s security and well-being. India is prepared to help in any way it can. We requested that our authorities remain vigilant in this regard. Additionally, PM Modi tweeted, “asked the MEA to stay in contact with the governments of Thailand and Myanmar.”

QUAKE-PRONE MYANMAR
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), earthquakes are rather common in Myanmar, which is located close to the Sagaing Fault, which runs through the middle of the country from north to south.

Three people were killed and numerous others were injured in 2016 when a strong 6.8-magnitude earthquake struck Bagan in central Myanmar. The medical system of the country, which borders India and is currently engaged in a civil war, is under stress.
