Day 10 collection for L2: Empuraan: As anticipation for the sequel “Azrael” grows, Mohanlal’s film approaches the ₹300 crore milestone

The Shen Dragon, a new Chinese villain gang, will be featured in the upcoming chapter, which will also examine Stephen Nedumpally’s transformation into Khureshi Ab’raam.

L2: Empuraan is getting closer to a whopping ₹300 crore worldwide. Despite controversy surrounding it, the Mohanlal-starring movie has surpassed Manjummel Boys to become the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever, with an estimated ₹250 crore already banked.

While foreign markets have contributed over ₹135 crore, domestic earnings currently stand at ₹106.50+ crore. This surpasses Manjummel Boys’ lifetime total of ₹241 crore, making it the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever.

Empuraan is currently ranked third in India’s 2025 global box office competition, behind Chhaava (₹800+ crore) and Sankranthiki Vasthunam (₹255+ crore).

According to trade observers, Empuraan might overtake Sankranthiki Vasthunam and move up to the No. 2 position.

However, with April bringing big Malayalam releases like Ram (April 18), starring Mohanlal, and Bazooka (April 10), starring Mammootty, the film’s momentum may encounter obstacles.

Since its March 27 release, the movie has been shrouded in controversy. Scenes showing the Gujarat riots of 2002, in which Prithviraj’s character Zayed Masood loses his parents, are a major flashpoint.

Actor and BJP MP Suresh Gopi brought up the matter in Parliament, claiming that the filmmakers were under “no censor pressure” and that “17 portions were voluntarily removed from the film.”

“As an artist, it is my responsibility to ensure that none of my films are antagonistic towards any political movement, ideology, or religious group,” Mohanlal wrote in an apology posted on Facebook.

A dam in the made-up town of Nedumpally caused new unrest in Tamil Nadu. Vaiko of the MDMK and former chief minister O Panneerselvam have claimed that it makes reference to the actual Mullaperiyar Dam, which has long been a point of contention between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.

They have demanded a state-wide ban or the removal of certain scenes.

The franchise is still going strong despite the commotion. L3: The Beginning was hinted at in the movie’s closing moments and formally revealed at the premiere. “The third part will be necessary for the completion of this film,” Prithviraj confirmed. The third part’s story idea is still in its infancy at the moment.

The Shen Dragon, a new Chinese villain gang, will be featured in the upcoming chapter, which will also examine Stephen Nedumpally’s transformation into Khureshi Ab’raam. Deepak Dev, the composer, has hinted that it might be called Azrael, a name that appears in the eerie climax track by Usha Uthup.
