As Lokesh Kanagaraj’s Coolie, starring Rajinikanth, and Ayan Mukerji’s action thriller War 2, starring Hrithik Roshan and Jr. NTR, prepare for their August 14 theatrical releases, expect major box office fireworks this Independence Day weekend.

Rajinikanth’s golden jubilee in cinema is also marked by Coolie’s release date; on August 15, 1975, his debut film, K Balachander’s Apoorva Raagangal, was released. Coolie has a significant early advantage because of that and the hysteria surrounding any Rajini release. The Rajinikanth movie will be the “biggest ever for a Tamil film,” according to trade analyst Sumit Kadel on X. He predicts that the movie will make between Rs. 80 and Rs. 90 crore in India and Rs. 155 to Rs. 165 crore worldwide.
Produced by Sun Pictures, Coolie has already crossed the Rs 30-crore mark (1,421,430 tickets sold as advance bookings for day 1) in the domestic market, according to industry tracker Sacnilk. For its part, Yash Raj Films’ War 2 is expected to rake in Rs 60 crore (advance bookings for day 1; tickets sold: 626,475).

Film critic Saibal Chatterjee says, “People in Chennai, Bengaluru are willing to shell out even Rs 2,500 for a ticket in the first two-three days. In the North, this will never occur, but the movie will be a huge hit, at least on the first weekend. It is anticipated that Coolie will be shown on 5,000 screens across roughly 100 countries.
It will be shown on roughly 1,980 screens in India, with roughly 1,000 of those being in Tamil Nadu alone.
For its Hindi version alone, the Ayan Mukerji-directed film will be shown on an incredible 5,000 screens throughout India. Since NTR is playing the lead, the movie will have Telugu and Tamil dubbings. According to Kadel, War 2 is anticipated to earn between Rs 50 and Rs 55 crore in India and Rs 90 to Rs 100 crore globally.
