Retro appears to be on a similar path to Suriya’s previous project, as its box office receipts declined in the days following a robust premiere.
Day 3 of the Retro Box Office Collection:
Chennai moviegoers flocked to theaters on Thursday to see Retro, an action-packed thriller that marked the long-awaited collaboration between director Karthik Subbaraj and actor Suriya. After Subbaraj’s last movie, Jigarthanda DoubleX (2023), was a box office success, there were high hopes that Retro would boost Suriya’s career after Kanguva, his previous movie, did not do well. Retro, on the other hand, appears to be taking a similar course to Suriya’s previous endeavor, with its box office receipts waning in the days following a robust premiere.
Industry tracker Sacnilk reports that Retro had a strong opening Thursday, earning Rs 24 crore. However, Friday saw a sharp decline in the movie’s earnings, which fell to Rs 7.75 crore per day. The movie made an additional Rs 7.75 crore on Saturday, matching Friday’s earnings despite predictions of a weekend boost. Retro’s three-day domestic box office total as of Sunday is Rs 34.75 crore.
Although the total revenue for the film has not yet been determined, Retro has made the most money in Tamil, followed by Telugu and Hindi dubbings. The movie’s current performance, however, is similar to that of Kanguva, which had a strong opening with Rs 28.5 crore but saw a significant drop to Rs 11.25 crore on day two and a slight increase to Rs 11.75 crore on day three. Ultimately, Kanguva made Rs 81.22 crore over the course of its existence.
Inconsistent trends have also been observed in the Tamil version of Retro’s occupancy levels. Occupancy was low on Saturday morning (28.28%) and increased to 45.02% in the afternoon. Nevertheless, evening shows fell once more to 42.16% before reaching a nighttime peak of 54.74% occupancy. For the movie to bounce back and end the long opening weekend with a strong box office showing, Sunday’s earnings will be critical.
Pooja Hegde, Jayaram, Joju George, Karunakaran, Nassar, and Prakash Raj are also featured in Retro, with a special cameo from Shriya Saran. The movie has potential despite the initial box office setback, and many people are optimistic that it will rebound in the days ahead. But whether Retro can buck the current trend and become a box office hit is still up in the air.
