Every year on May 1, Maharashtra Day, also called Maharashtra Din, is observed as a state holiday. This year, Thursday is the day that marks the creation of the Marathi-speaking state of Maharashtra. Throughout the state, official ceremonies, parades, and cultural events are held to commemorate the Day.
Since May 1st is International Labor Day, it is a day of great significance worldwide. The division of the Bombay State occurred on this day in 1960, making it a significant day in Indian history.
What’s open and what’s closed on May 1
Stock market
One of the fourteen trading holidays for 2025 is Maharashtra Day. The National Stock Exchange (NSE) and the BSE, two Indian stock exchanges, will be closed on Thursday, May 1, 2025, in observance of Maharashtra Day.
For the duration of the day, trading will be halted in all segments. Because Maharashtra Day is a regional holiday, the securities lending and borrowing (SLB), equity, equity derivatives, and currency derivatives segments will not be open today.
Equity markets will be closed today, and the Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will operate according to a revised schedule. While the morning session, which runs from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, will remain closed, the evening session, which runs from 5:00 pm to 11:30 pm, will open for trading in commodities like gold, silver, crude oil, and agricultural products.
Notably, on Friday, May 2, 2025, regular trading will resume on all exchanges.
Offices, schools and Banks
Since this day is a state holiday in Maharashtra, banks, government buildings, and educational institutions are closed.
Several cities, including Belapur, Bengaluru, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad in Andhra Pradesh, Hyderabad in Telangana, Imphal, Kochi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Nagpur, Panaji, Patna, Raipur, and Thiruvananthapuram, have their banks closed today in accordance with the Reserve Bank of India’s (RBI) list of holidays.
Liquor shops
This day is observed as a dry day, so as per regulations liquor shops will be closed implying that there will be a prohibition on the sale of alcohol across Maharashtra.
What is open?
Hospitals, emergency services and public transport will continue to operate as usual on May 1.
