Tahawwur Rana demands three items while in NIA custody: a pen, the Quran, and …

In an effort to look into a larger conspiracy, NIA is questioning 26/11 conspirator Tahawwur Rana for a second day. In New Delhi, he is detained in a locked cell.

Tahawwur Hussain Rana, the conspirator behind the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, was questioned by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for the second day in a row in an effort to look into a wider conspiracy surrounding the 2008 coordinated strikes.

According to news agency PTI, which cited unnamed sources, Tahawwur Rana is being held in a highly secured cell within the NIA’s head office at the CGO complex in New Delhi, where he is constantly watched over by security guards.

Tahawwur Rana is being treated “like any other arrested person with no special treatment,” an official told HT. In his cell at the agency headquarters, he is seen performing Namaz five times a day and has been given a copy of the Quran upon his request.

He asked for a copy of the Quran, which we gave him. An officer described Rana as a “religious man” and stated, “He is seen offering Namaz five times in his cell.”

In addition to the Quran, Rana requested a pen and paper, which were given to him; however, he is closely watched to make sure he doesn’t hurt himself with the pen. The officer observed, “He has not made any other demands beyond that.”

In accordance with court orders, Rana is permitted to see an attorney from the Delhi Legal Services Authority (DLSA) every other day and is required to have a medical examination every 48 hours. Another officer affirmed that “all procedures are being followed, like for other arrested individuals.”

After being extradited from the United States, Rana was taken to the NIA headquarters early on Friday morning after a Delhi court granted the probe agency 18 days of custody.
