Only a small number of animated films in India have achieved mediocre success in theaters; the majority have found their audience on television and digital platforms. Movies like Roadside Romeo (2008) and Hanuman (2005) did well at the box office but didn’t create much of a stir. Indian-produced animated films have typically had difficulty making a name for themselves in the marketplace, whereas foreign animated films such as Incredibles 2 and Frozen 2 attracted respectable audiences here.
With Ashwin Kumar’s animated devotional film Mahavatar Narsimha, that changed. Positive word-of-mouth and strong family audiences helped the movie, which was released in several Indian languages, gain steady traction in its first week before seeing a notable spike in its second weekend.
Mahavatar Narsimha surpassed the ₹100 crore milestone at the Indian box office by the conclusion of its second weekend. It is now the first animated movie, whether from India or another country, to achieve this domestic milestone.
Prior to this, animated movies like Frozen 2, Incredibles 2, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had made just over ₹50 crore in India. With just over ₹10 crore, Hanuman set the record for Indian productions. Now, Mahavatar Narsimha has transcended all of them.
In the future, the movie is anticipated to make ₹150 crore, and if the current trend continues, it may even surpass ₹200 crore globally. With six more films scheduled until 2037, Hombale Films has revealed a long-term plan to grow the Mahavatar Cinematic Universe over the next 12 years, bolstered by this success.
This might be a turning point for Indian animation since it indicates that viewers are becoming more interested in animated tales with Indian themes. Mahavatar Narsimha’s success could pave the way for more ambitious animated films in the nation.
